Text to Magdolna Szabó´s
exhibition Kinetic Scilence
Proximity and distance, layer upon layer of condensation in contrast to vacancy. I am pulled into the work without really finding an anchor, without being able to orient myself. The wish to remain, to stop for a moment and become absorbed in the structure arises. Condensation and clusters of form elements are presented together with an expanding or shrinking vacancy. The white circle – the vacancy “eats” itself into the coloured circle until that which remains could be likened to a halo of colour or a centre/nucleus of vacancy.
Magdolna Szabó elaborates almost exclusively with the circle as primary form in her paintings. Strong contrasts alternate with subtle shifts in nuance which accentuate and focus the elements of form which arise in the meeting and overlap. The colours are intense sometimes almost luminous in their clarity. Szabó’s exploration and interpretation of vacancy in her painting arouses both joy and wonder in a way which feels almost ecstatic.
Magdolna Szabó's exhibition Kinetic silence at Ystads konstmuseum presents an in depth look at her long term artistic exploration of vacancy, form, colour and movement. The exhibition contains a selection of watercolours on paper, a series of monotypes and a completely new work Kinetic Silence – which has given the exhibition its name. Kinetic Silence is a more than one hour long animation projected in a loop. It is based on Szabó’s project with monotypes which she has been working with since 1996.
